Windows 11 goes live next month

Microsoft's new Windows 11 operating system will be rolled out to customers from 5 October 2021, with the first computers loaded with the new OS going on sale on this date.

At the same time, the firm will start providing a free Windows 11 upgrade to existing customers using Windows 10 on compatible devices. This roll-out is expected to be completed by mid-2022.

A number of computers already on sale come with the promise of a free upgrade to Windows 11, just like they did before the roll-out of Windows 10.

Windows 10 users who don't have compatible devices for Windows 11 have been promised Microsoft support for their OS until October 2025. This will include full security updates.

Windows 11 includes a new Microsoft Store that offers compatible Android apps for Windows, which can be bought through a deal with Amazon.

The new OS was first announced this June.
