Neos Networks reaches 550 unbundled BT exchanges

Neos Networks has attained its target of unbundling a total of 550 BT exchanges before the end of the year, following the completion of its UK network expansion programme, Project Edge.

As a result, the company now has a full-fibre footprint of more than 34,000km before the end of 2021. It can now supply data speeds of up to 100Gbps to almost 750,000 business enterprise postcodes.

“We’ve hit our 2021 target slightly ahead of schedule and that represents a great leap forward for our company and our vision to be the premier supplier of B2B focused infrastructure in the UK. But it cannot stop there, and Project Edge will continue to reach out to help UK businesses access full-fibre, high-speed, high-capacity connectivity on their doorsteps,” said Colin Sempill (pictured), CEO of Neos Networks.

In the last year, Neos has managed to unbundle 300 exchanges to reach its target, despite having to overcome the challenges associated with the pandemic and lockdown. However, Neos says it plans to go even further next year and expects to unbundle a total of 700 BT exchanges.

“During 2022 I would expect the number of unbundled BT exchanges to continue to climb towards 700, and we will also look to target last-mile fibre connectivity in key regional business hubs,” Sempill added.

The company, formerly a division of the national energy provider SSE, says all of this should also help the government deliver gigabit coverage for 85% of UK premises by 2025.
