IBM tackles ‘shadow data’ surge with Polar Security buyout

IBM plans to bolster its Guardium unit with DSPM technology following its acquisition of Polar Security.

This is IBM's fifth acquisition this year and the thirtieth under CEO Arvind Krishna, who took charge in 2020 to enhance IBM's hybrid cloud and AI offerings.

IBM explained that the move addresses the surge in untracked or unmanaged ‘shadow data’ due to increased cloud adoption during the pandemic.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
