The growth in datacentres has meant more interest in all aspects of the facility. For example, there is a new market in intelligent power systems, where distributor Gamma Global has just become an Authorised Distributor for Server Technology, a datacentre power strategy specialist and producer of rackmount power distribution and monitoring solutions.

Andy Kelly, Business Unit Director for Datacentre Distribution: “This partnership with Server Technology perfectly complements our existing Datacentre Distribution offering and we’re particularly excited about how it will benefit our customers.”

The market for intelligent PDUs has grown rapidly over the last ten years due to a number of reasons, he explains. “Firstly, companies began to ask their IT department questions around the consumption of power in the data centre. They were aware of the costs but not how these costs related down to the racks and the equipment in the data centre. This drove IT to seek for ways to provide this level of information. Historically IT walked the data centre hall with a clipboard taking readings from each PDU in each cabinet, but this was eventually seen as a very inaccurate and resource intensive way of providing this information, thus an interest in PDUs being measured over the network and by using software became important.”

The other fundamental reason has been service availability. With increasing need to deliver data immediately, IT have been put under pressure to ensure that their systems have a 99.999% (also called a “five-nines”) uptime profile, which has switched IT teams from being reactive to proactive in their infrastructure management, says Marc Marazzi (below), Server Technology’s VP of International Sales. “Being able to measure and monitor power at the PDU became a requirement as dramatic changes in power (going down as well as up) would alert IT to potential hazards that would challenge service availability.”

“The last phenomenon we have seen recently is to do with the contraction of data centre cabinets. We are seeing organisations reducing their data centre footprint as more technology can be put in a smaller profile. For instance, 100 Racks of equipment can process what 1000 racks processed ten years ago.”

This has been good from a footprint cost and IT management perspective, says Andy Kelly, but has placed even more importance on the racks than before. “This has driven IT to invest more money in higher quality, more intelligent PDUs, as the cost of failure in one rack would amount to the equivalent of many more racks before. This is why we think Server Technology's premium solutions have become more relevant than ever before, and we are excited to be able to offer them.”

“Their PDUs are designed and engineered to meet all critical data centre and telecommunication network needs to improve uptime, energy efficiency and reduce costs – that’s music to our customers’ ears.”

Marc Marazzi adds: “Gamma share our values and make an ideal partner for us. We are both committed to helping customers decide on the right power solution for their unique environment and, as part of our expanding strategy and broadening our reach in Europe, choosing the right partners is critical to the success of our business and our customers’ business.”

Server Technology is headquartered in Reno Nevada and currently has sales offices in England, Germany and Hong Kong. Based out of London, Marazzi will help expand Server Technology’s international presence. Gamma will aim to help Server Technology access European channel partners, raise the brand’s profile amongst European resellers and ultimately grow their end user client base.
